Steve Rosenbaum: CES 2012: The Year of iStuff

This year's massive consumer electronics show had plenty of shiny new screens, tablets, and ultra-books.

But if you looked closely, the star of the show wasn't the hardware - it was the emergence of the connected world that is changing the way we live.

We've all expected our TV's would connect to the web -and now that's here. Our laptops and tablets, sure of course. But what about our shower?

iShower is a WiFi enabled streaming device. But it doesn't stream water, instead it streams songs. Music from any discoverable device in your home is now putting a soundtrack to your most private morning rituals. Waterproof? Of course it is.

Wander in to the back yard and fire up the Webber for the summer tradition of a Barbecue
and you'll find that this old style tradition of flames and coal has been 'enhanced' with technology. iGrill turns the famous 'is it done yet' game into a digitally accurate - wireless - solution.

Elsewhere around the house, any concerns you may have about your children or misbehaving nanny can be monitored - wirelessly - using iBaby.

Now, you can't put an RFID tag on your children (that would be creepy) but what about the four-legged family member who tends to run off and leave you searching the neighborhood till Fido gets hungry? Well, now there's iDog (which is actually called Tagg) a wireless GPS dog tracker that gives you a real time map of your escaped puppy's current position.

And, back at home - the whole medicine chest and family first aid kit has been wired, with iHealth providing digital blood pressure monitors, pedometers, even blood glucose levels.

We've arrived at a moment where anything that has a battery or a plug is expected to have a connection to the wired world. While there's been the novelty of the wired refrigerator at CES for years, this year for the the first time the almost universal access to wifi, along with web services that can provide a useful service to web-connected devices seems to have turned a page in the history of our world and our electronic connection to the devices we count on to manage our complex lives.

It used to be their was our digital life, and our 'real' life. Now - post CES 2012 - you can see the convergence of connected machines.

But now in the world of iShow, IGrill, and iBaby - we're wired 24-7 to the things that matter.

There's even - iLove.

Top Picks: Examining the Wild West, an opera on Anne Boleyn, and more

'Moneyball' features a great performance by Brad Pitt, jazz duo Charlie Haden and Hank Jones release a beautiful collection of hymns and spirituals, a video shows breathtaking views of Ho Chi Minh City and the traffic inside it, and more top picks.

How sweet the sound

Amazing Grace, a new DVD release from the Bill Moyers TV library, traces the history of the famous hymn. The special, which originally aired on PBS, includes performances from Johnny Cash, Judy Collins, Pete Seeger, and other notables who have sung this most-recorded of all spirituals ? penned by a white slave-ship owner in the 18th century and reportedly based on the melodies heard from the slaves as they sang from the hold of his ship.

Who tamed the Wild West?

PBS's "American Experience" series launches its 24th season with an eye on the icons of the American West. The shows reexamine some of the most debated and mythic figures of this storied era, including Wyatt Earp, Geronimo, Annie Oakley, and Jesse James. Tune in Jan. 17 for a fresh look at Custer's last stand.

Brad and Baseball

Brad Pitt brings ballast and swaggering humor to Moneyball, now out on DVD, the story of real-life Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane, who took the team into the big league. Not quite "The Social Network" of baseball movies, it still has an entertaining wonkiness.

Anne and Anna

Donizetti's Anna Bolena on PBS's "Great Performances at the Met" tells the tragic story of Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII's second wife. Anna Netrebko sings the lead role in a tour de force, highly anticipated performance ? the first in North America. Stephen Costello, the up-and-coming American tenor, plays opposite the diva, singing the role of her doomed lover, Lord Percy. Airs Jan. 20 at 9 p.m.

Inspired interplay

?

Just because some music is quiet doesn't mean it can't pack a wallop. In this case, jazz soul mates Charlie Haden (stand-up bass) and Hank Jones (piano) deliver a master class in taste, restraint, and deep soul with Come Sunday, a collection of hymns and spirituals associated with African-Americans' struggles for freedom and dignity. Sixteen years ago, the pair recorded a similar collection, "Steal Away," which garnered well-deserved raves and Grammy nominations. This welcome reunion finds them once again in radiant form, recorded just months before Jones's passing last year at age 91. Inspiring and moving.

beauty and the traffic

Photographer Rob Whitworth's time-lapse video of Ho Chi Minh City not only provides beautiful views of the Vietnamese metropolis but also reveals the sheer volume of traffic that crisscrosses the city by road and boat each day. Try to stop your heart from leaping into your mouth when some of those Vespa and motorcycle riders weave through the city center. Watch it at: http://vimeo.com/32958521

Cops: 'Judge Judy' sparks 'mad' hammer attack

Janet Ann Knowles apparently doesn't like Judge Judy.

The 62-year-old Jupiter woman was arrested Sunday on aggravated battery charges after he hit a 65-year-old man on the head with a hammer after she got "upset with Judge Judy," according to a police report obtained by the Palm Beach Post.

According to the report, the man was sitting on his recliner watching the judge's show when Knowles lost her cool and attacked him with the hammer.

    For more, visit NBCMiami.com

When officers responded to the home, they found the unnamed victim holding bloody paper towels to his head, where he'd sustained a large cut, the report said.

Knowles told the officers she was upset "Judge Judy" was on the TV and became "mad" and hit the man with the hammer, the report said.

The report said Knowles had trouble holding a conversation and started talking about a neighbor and what the neighbor was wearing.

Knowles was arrested and booked into the Palm Beach County jail, where she remains held without bond. It was unknown whether she has an attorney.

The victim, whose relationship to Knowles was unknown, was treated for his injuries at the scene.

iOS, Android and Mac stats for World of Goo

World of Goo is a physics based game that's popular among kids and adults. It started off as a PC desktop game and transitioned to the Mac, iPhone and iPad. The company recently sold its one millionth copy on iOS and released some sales stats for its different platforms. Not surprisingly, the universal version for iOS is its top seller followed by the iPhone version, which together account for 96% of the game's Apple-based revenue. The Mac version comes in last with only 4% of the revenue.

The app also launched on Android about a month ago, and sales are strong. The paid version has been downloaded 70,000 times, and the free version has topped 450,000 downloads. During its first month of sales, the iPhone version reached 180,000 downloads. 2D Boy claims it's not fair to compare the sales of the two platforms because iOS customers had to pay for the app, while Android customers could choose a free version. The company says these figures show that the "Android Market is no longer the tiny upstart it was a year or two ago" and notes that "there is an opportunity for high visibility paid games to do very well on Android."

Snapped bungee plunges tourist into African river (AP)

CANBERRA, Australia ? An Australian tourist bungee jumping in Africa plunged 365 feet (111 meters) into a river when her cord snapped, but she managed to swim to safety with a broken collarbone and her legs tied together.

Erin Langworthy told Nine Network television news Sunday that she blacked out briefly when she hit the Zambesi River on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe on Dec. 31.

"I felt like I'd been slapped all over," the 22-year-old from Perth said.

Video taken of the jump shows the cord snapping and Langworthy smacking into the river before the current pulled her into rapids.

"You get sucked under and then you pop up so it's very disorienting ? I didn't know which was up or down," she said.

She said the trailing cord repeatedly snagged, so she "had to swim down and yank the bungee cord out of whatever it was caught on to make it to the surface."

Langworthy swam through the rapids to reach the Zimbabwe bank.

Southern Province Police Commissioner Brenda Muntemba told the Post Zambia newspaper that Langworthy was treated at a clinic in Zimbabwe before being evacuated to South Africa.

The jump from the Victoria Falls Bridge is operated by Safari Par Excellence, whose website describes the bungee experience as "111 meters (365 feet) of pure Adrenalin!"
