Ashley Judd says she won't seek Senate seat

Ashley Judd (JB Lacroix/Getty Images)

Ashley Judd, a Democrat who was mulling a challenge to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell for his Kentucky Senate seat in 2014, won't run after all, the actress announced Wednesday.

"After serious and thorough contemplation, I realize that my responsibilities and energy at this time need to be focused on my family," Judd said in an announcement on her Twitter page. "Regretfully, I am currently unable to consider a campaign for the Senate. I have spoken to so many Kentuckians over these last few months who expressed their desire for a fighter for the people & new leader. While that won't be me at this time, I will continue to work as as hard as I can to ensure the needs of Kentucky families are met by returning this Senate seat to whom it rightfully belongs: the people and their needs, dreams, and great potential."

Had she decided to run, Judd's campaign would have faced an uphill battle against the Kentucky Republican. For starters, Judd's family lives in Tennessee, not Kentucky, and Republicans had already begun to attack her for it. (Judd was a Tennessee delegate at the Democratic National Convention last year.) Her public history of liberal activism and repeated controversial statements?she said, for example, ?I have been raped twice, so I think I can handle Mitch McConnell"?also may have made it difficult for her to connect with Kentucky voters.

With Judd out, Kentucky Democrats are still searching for a candidate to run against McConnell.

Professional Business Marketing ? 'Matt Lauer is the best in the ...

A top NBC News executive said Wednesday the network is not considering replacing Matt Lauer as anchor of the Today show despite reports that Anderson Cooper of CNN was approached about the job.

?Matt Lauer is the best in the business,? said Alex Wallace, a NBC News executive who oversees the Today show. ?We want him in the Today show anchor chair for many years to come.?

Wallace spoke after reports of a meeting with Cooper first appeared in Deadline Hollywood. The report was confirmed to The Associated Press by a source who spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions were private and was not authorized to speak to the media.

The longtime king of morning television,?Today has fallen behind ABC?s Good Morning America in the ratings over the past year, particularly since the messy ouster of Ann Curry as Lauer?s co-anchor last summer. There has been a flurry of stories recently retracing that decision. Lauer has said he urged the network to move more slowly with its planned changes, but a New York Magazine cover story this week suggested he didn?t like Curry and did little to help her.

Whatever happened, it?s clear that many Today viewers who did not like what happened to Curry have taken their anger out on Lauer.

In 2012, Lauer?s positive ?Q? score was 23 ? meaning 23 percent of people who knew him considered Lauer one of their favorite broadcasters, according to Marketing Evaluations Inc., a company that measures public sentiment toward well-known personalities. Last summer that score dropped to 14 and this month stands at 9, the company said. For the first time, George Stephanopoulos of Good Morning America has surpassed him. Among women, who make up the bulk of morning show audiences, Stephanopoulos is nearly twice as popular as Lauer and his GMA?partner, Robin Roberts, is nearly three times as popular, the company said.

Where in the world is Matt Lauer? Trapped in a vortex of bad vibes with no escape in sight.

The approach to Cooper could mean that NBC has concluded that the time is right to actively work on replacing Lauer. Or not: his contract expires at the end of 2014 and it is widely assumed that Lauer will be ready then to move on from a job he?s held since 1997. Under those circumstances, a forward-looking management team would be expected to be looking at alternatives.

?NBC News has many exploratory talks with talent inside and outside of the network, but to read anything specific into that is presumptuous,? said an NBC News executive who spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not allowed to discuss personnel moves.

Lauer has talked about resetting Today to be more serious, with less emphasis on crime stories. NBC was criticized this week by advocates for sexual abuse victims because Today aired excerpts of an interview that filmmaker John Ziegler had with convicted Penn State molester Jerry Sandusky; Lauer interviewed Ziegler on the air.

Potential internal replacements for Lauer could include Willie Geist, who co-hosts the third hour of Today in addition to work on MSNBC?s ?Morning Joe,? and ?Meet the Press? anchor David Gregory. Both have subbed for Lauer when he was absent.

The question for many in the television industry is whether the Today show can hope to change its fortunes with Lauer at the helm. Today hasn?t beaten Good Morning America for any week in the ratings since the Olympics last summer and with Roberts? return after an illness in February, the gap between the two shows hit its widest. NBC says preliminary numbers show the two shows last week were as close as they?ve been since December and that ?Today? frequently wins among youthful news viewers.

?This awful, false narrative campaign against Matt has certainly made him vulnerable, but Matt is still, in my opinion, the best anchor who has ever occupied that chair,? said Shelley Ross, former executive producer at Good Morning America and The Early Show at CBS, where she competed against Lauer. She said she believed NBC?s competitors were helping to keep negative stories about Lauer alive.

NBC was right to replace Curry but handled it badly, she said.

The cyclical nature of television is also likely hurting Lauer. It?s a rare personality that stays beloved forever. Ross and others in the industry believe that Lauer?s latest contract, which reportedly pays him $25 million a year, drove a wedge between the anchor and viewers who no longer view him as a regular guy.

Paul Friedman, a former news executive at ABC and CBS, also said Lauer is the best he?s seen in his role. But currently, ABC?s Good Morning America is a broadcast that provides viewers with information from personalities who appear to be enjoying what they?re doing, he said.

?I don?t think the fuss in the press is what matters to viewers,? said Friedman, who teaches journalism at Connecticut?s Quinnipiac University. ?What matters is what is seen on the air, and right now what?s on the air is a cast that doesn?t appear to enjoy themselves and what they?re doing ? as they do at Good Morning America.?

Bob Casey Explains Gun Control Switch After Newtown Shooting

Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) explained his switch in position on gun control during a Monday morning appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," saying he thought about the Newton, Conn., shooting and realized it could have been even worse.

"When I watched more and learned more about how he killed his mother and the rage that he brought to that school ... I began to think of what could?ve happened, and not the reality but the potential," he said, according to The Hill. "He was not going to kill 20 children, but he was going try and kill several hundred and would have if he'd had the time and the capacity."

Casey announced in December that he would support gun control measures such as bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. It was a significant switch given his longtime opposition to gun control and high rating from the National Rifle Association. The change was prompted by the shooting of 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, along with the shooter's mother, a massacre that has restarted long-dormant talks of further regulating guns.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) announced last week that he would introduce a bill to require universal background checks on gun purchases, along with several other measures. A ban on assault weapons was not included in the base bill but will be offered as an amendment.

Other Democrats -- including Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.V.), Mark Warner (D-Va.) and Reid -- also said their thinking on guns changed after the Newtown shooting.

Casey said he hopes other lawmakers are willing to consider supporting such measures.

"Elected official get in lanes, and on this issue you're either in one lane or the other, and there's really no middle ground even as you try to articulate a middle ground," he said on "Morning Joe." "I think that's where people are -- they just fall into their lanes and they vote the way they vote over time."

No. 15 seed Florida Gulf Coast stuns No. 2 seed Georgetown

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Florida Gulf Coast sure made an entrance at the NCAA tournament.

A school that hasn't even celebrated its first 20-year reunion busted a load of brackets with a 78-68 victory over second-seeded Georgetown on Friday night in the second round of the South Regional.

In just their second season of eligibility for Division I postseason, the Eagles used a 21-2 second-half run to pull away from the Hoyas and then held on in the final minute to become the seventh No. 15 seed to beat a No. 2.

Sherwood Brown scored 24 points and Bernard Thompson had 23 to lead Florida Gulf Coast, the champions of the Atlantic Sun Conference.

FGCU (25-10) will play the winner of the game between seventh-seeded San Diego State and No. 10 Oklahoma on Sunday.

"We didn't come here and have the attitude that we're just glad to be here," said FGCU point guard Brett Comer, who finished with 12 points,10 assists and just two turnovers. "We decided we can play with anybody and we did."

A night after America's oldest university, Harvard, pulled off a major upset over fourth-seeded New Mexico, one of its youngest ? FGCU's first student was admitted in 1997 ? got one that was even bigger.

The Eagles' monster run gave them a 52-33 lead with 12:28 to play. The Hoyas staged a furious rally to get within 72-68 with 52 seconds left but the Eagles went 6 of 10 from the free throw line to seal it.

"In the second half, we pushed the ball, we got out, we ran, we made shots, got some alley-oop dunks to energize the crowd. I'm very proud of our players," said coach Andy Enfield, whose wife ? supermodel Amanda Marcum ? was shown several times on the arena's big screen.

For those who don't know FCGU, and that was probably plenty of people as of Friday afternoon, Florida Gulf Coast is a state university in Fort Myers with an enrollment of about 12,000 students.

This is FGCU's first tournament and Georgetown's 29th, including the 1984 national championship. But the Eagles did beat Miami earlier this season.

It was another disappointing NCAA exit for the Hoyas (25-7), who have lost to a double-digit seed in their last four appearances. The last time they made it to the second weekend of the tournament was in 2007, when they reached the Final Four.

"I wish I could," Georgetown coach John Thompson III said when asked if he could figure out the losses to lower seeds. "Trust me, more than anyone on Earth, I've tried to analyze it. I don't know."

Markel Starks had 23 points for the Hoyas, a tri-champion of the Big East regular season and one of the top defensive teams in the nation.

That didn't seem to bother the Eagles much.

While Georgetown came in allowing 55.7 points per game, FGCU beat that number with 9:22 to play when it led 57-40. The Hoyas allowed opponents to shoot 37.6 percent from the field, fourth-best in the country. The Eagles shot 42.9 percent (21 of 49) and they held the Hoyas to 37.5 percent from the field (24 of 64).

The FGCU fans who made the trip to Philadelphia were loud all game. The rest of the crowd at Wells Fargo Center joined them during the big run and there's nothing to bring fans together like rooting against a heavy favorite.

"I don't think anybody on our team has ever played in front of that many people," said reserve forward Eddie Murray, who had nine points.

The Eagles charged at their fans when the game ended and ? after some of them shook hands with Hall of Famer and TV analyst Reggie Miller ? it was a celebration that could be felt all the way to back to campus.

Big East Player of the Year Otto Porter Jr. had 13 points on 5-of-17 shooting and 11 rebounds. On this night he couldn't match Brown, the A-Sun's player of the year.

"It feels really good to be in this position right now," Brown said after the game.

The Hoyas used an 8-0 run to take an 18-11 lead midway through the first half but that's where their offense went cold ? very cold.

The Eagles closed the half on a 13-4 run as Georgetown missed nine straight shots and committed five turnovers. FGCU took a 24-22 lead on two free throws by Eddie Murray with 26 seconds left. In another example of how out of synch Georgetown was offensively, the Hoyas passed the ball around as the halftime horn sounded, allowed the Eagles to keep their lead.

As the night wound down, one fan yelled at the Eagles to stick around Philly a couple of more days.

"Get a cheese steak, kid! Get a cheese steak!"

The crowd then paid Florida Gulf Coast the ultimate tribute: the E-A-G-L-E-S! Eagles! chant reserved for their favorite NFL team.

Disney Plans Live-Action Beauty and the Beast

slice_beauty_and_the_beast_disney_01

Fresh off the rather large opening weekend for Sam Raimi?s fantasy pic Oz the Great and Powerful, Disney is ready to put a new spin on yet another classic story.? Deadline reports that screenwriter Joe Ahearne, who most recently wrote Danny Boyle?s upcoming psychological thriller Trance, has been tapped to pen the script for a live-action reimagining of Beauty and the Beast called The Beast.? This seemingly sets off yet another Snow White-esque race between two fairy tale-themed pics, as Warner Bros. has long been developing a new take on Beauty and the Beast with Guillermo del Toro directing and Emma Watson set to star.? Hit the jump for more on Disney?s latest move towards world domination.

beauty-and-the-beastThe development of Oz the Great and Powerful was a direct result of the massive success of Disney?s 2010 reimagining of Alice in Wonderland, which went on to gross over $1 billion worldwide.? Now that Raimi?s Oz seems like it?s enjoying similar success (though its opening weekend wasn?t near as big as Wonderland?s), Disney appears to be confident enough to move forward with yet another live-action revisionist take on a classic fairy tale in addition to the upcoming?Maleficent?and?Cinderella.

Ahearne?s darker-leaning previous work likely means that we?re in for something quite different from Disney?s classic 1991 animated iteration of?Beauty and the Beast, so it?ll be interesting to see how Disney handles the rougher parts of the story. ?Mandeville?s David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman will be producing The Beast alongside Disney?s LouAnne Brickhouse.? It remains to be seen if Disney will wait to see how Ahearne?s script turns out before attaching a director or if they?ll start looking for a helmer straight away, but you can bet they won?t be letting this thing linger in development for too long.

What this means for Guillermo del Toro?s Beauty and the Beast is uncertain.? Del Toro has slowly been continuing development on his film while he juggles his hundreds of other projects, and last February Andrew Davies (Bridget Jones? Diary) came on to pen the script.? Del Toro?s schedule is pretty packed in the near future with post-production on Pacific Rim and the pilot for the FX series The Strain, and he?s set to begin filming his next feature film, the haunted house story Crimson Peak, early next year, so his next open window to start filming a new movie would likely be late 2014 or sometime in 2015.

If Warner Bros. wants to pick up the pace on their Beauty and the Beast film as a result of Disney?s announcement, del Toro will likely be replaced as director, unfortunately.? Hopefully they have enough confidence in their project that they stick with del Toro?s vision and give him the time he needs to bring it to fruition.

What do you think, folks?? Do you want to see a new live-action version of Beauty and the Beast from Disney, and if so, who would you like to see direct it?

Dallas gunshot victim can continue physical therapy thanks to ...

Lukas Da Cruz, who police say was an innocent bystander when he was paralyzed in a drive-by shooting, is able to continue physical therapy thanks to influx of donations. (Vernon Bryant/The Dallas Morning News)

In today?s paper, I have a story about an 8-year-old girl in McKinney who has taken it upon herself to help a gunshot victim whom she?s never met. She has raised about $200 through a combination of emptying her piggy bank, enlisting her classmates to help and going door-to-door in her neighborhood asking for donations.

I first heard about Katelyn Indelicato from her teacher at McClure Elementary. She wrote to me to tell me that a story I wrote about 21-year-old Lukas Da Cruz, who police say was an innocent victim when he was paralyzed in a drive-by shooting last year, had captured the heart of one of her third-graders.

Eight-year-old Katelyn Indelicato has raised about $200 for Da Cruz, a man she's never met. She's on a mission to prove that anyone can make a difference. (Louis DeLuca/The Dallas Morning News)

Katelyn has given so generously of her time, money and prayers to a stranger in need. But she isn?t the only one who stepped up to help Da Cruz after the story ran in the paper last month.

Donations and cards poured in to Project Walk Dallas, where Da Cruz goes twice a week for physical therapy sessions. The sessions cost $200 each, which is more than Da Cruz?s family can afford long-term.

But thanks to more than $4,500 in donations in recent weeks, Da Cruz can attend therapy through May and part of June without worrying about how to pay for it.

The overwhelming support has helped restore Da Cruz?s faith in humanity, which had waved after the shooting.

?There are a lot of people out there that [have] a big heart,? Da Cruz said. ?That puts me up to know people that I don?t really know are there for me.?

His aunt, Berenice Da Cruz, is a hairdresser and said one of her clients had made a large donation to help her nephew get started at therapy. But the money was running out and the recent donations have allowed their family to stop thinking about the financials and focus on helping Da Cruz recover.

?The stress of ?Oh my god, what are we doing to do? How are we going to do it??? she said. ?We were able to just take a month and take a break.?

?We?re very grateful,? she said.

Since the donations and cards came in, Berenice Da Cruz said she has seen a difference in her nephew?s outlook. He feels an obligation to work hard in his recovery, she said.

?Before, you know, he would get in a bad mood and he would stay there ? Now, he doesn?t. He tries to fight it,? she said.??The disappointment [in] people, in life, is turning around. It made him feel like people do care or he does matter.?

Since starting physical therapy in January, Da Cruz has regained the strength he needs to cook for himself, help out with laundry and transfer himself in and out of the car.

?Thank you, from the family,? Berenice Da Cruz said. ?We?re grateful that he?s able to take care of himself. He?s regaining his independence. He?s doing really well.?

Donations to help Lukas Da Cruz and his family pay for physical therapy can be made in Da Cruz?s name to Project Walk Dallas, 15046 Beltway Drive, Dallas, TX 75001.

(AP) ? U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said he believes U.S. officials will be able to work things out with Afghan leaders who have ordered special operations forces out of Wardak province, even as commandos face a Monday deadline to leave.

Hagel's comments came on his first trip to Afghanistan as defense secretary. On his first morning in Kabul, two suicide bombings, one outside the Afghan Defense Ministry and the other near a police checkpoint in eastern Khost province, killed at least 19 people, including a U.S. contractor. A Taliban spokesman said the blast outside the defense ministry was a message to the visiting Pentagon chief.

The violence and the order to withdraw the special operations forces underscore the military and diplomatic complexities confronting the Obama administration and the U.S.-led NATO force as they work to end combat operations in 2014.

Hagel said he could hear the explosion during a meeting held at a safe location a distance away from the site.

"We're in a war zone, I've been in war. You know, so ? you shouldn't be surprised when a bomb goes off or there's an explosion," Hagel said.

Hagel is expected to meet Sunday with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who ordered the U.S. forces to leave the province just outside Kabul because of allegations that Afghans working with the commandos were involved in abusive behavior and torture.

"I feel confident that we'll be able to work this out," Hagel told reporters during a stop at Jalalabad Airfield, where he met with commanders and spoke to troops.

U.S. officials insist they have seen no evidence that American forces were involved in the abuse of Afghan civilians.

"Each of those accusations has been answered, and we're not involved," said Brigadier Adam Findlay, NATO's deputy chief of staff of operations and a member of the Australian military. "There are obviously atrocities occurring there, but it's not linked to us, and the kind of atrocities we are seeing, fingers cut off, other mutilations to bodies, is just not the way we work."

A senior defense official said Saturday that while it's not yet clear what will come out of Hagel's meeting with Karzai, the U.S. believes the door is not closed to resolving the issues.

A coalition official who works with special operations forces said Saturday that while the commandos are ready to pull out, their operations are continuing at this point, and there is some hope that an 11th hour negotiation can be reached that will allow them to stay. The official said the Afghan forces in Wardak are not yet ready to operate without the continued assistance and training from the U.S. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

Findlay said NATO officials have done "prudent planning" to withdraw special operations forces and replace them with conventional forces, if Karzai sticks to his edict after meetings this weekend with Hagel and the top U.S. military commander in Afghanistan, Gen. Joseph Dunford.

The order for the U.S. forces to leave comes despite worries that Wardak could be more vulnerable to the Taliban and insurgents. "What we've got to try to do is go to a middle ground that meets the president's frustration," but also keeps insurgents from using Wardak as a staging ground to launch attacks on the capital, Findlay told The Associated Press Saturday.

After a meeting with Karzai and the Afghan defense minister earlier Saturday, Dunford reiterated that a compromise allowing some commandos stay is possible.

"We agreed to continue to work this issue with his minister, to ensure that we have adequate protection for the force, that we were going to accomplish our security mission in Wardak, and also meet his concerns about moving Afghan forces in the lead," Dunford said.

On Saturday Hagel flew to Bagram Air Field, about an hour outside the capital, where he met with Maj. Gen. William Mayville, the U.S. commander of forces in the east. He also met with the commander of special operations forces in Afghanistan, Maj. Gen. Raymond Thomas.

There are about 10,000 U.S. and coalition special operations forces in the country training Afghan local police and commando units as well as battling insurgents.

Hagel ? who received two Purple Hearts after being wounded twice in Vietnam ? later handed out his first combat awards as Pentagon chief. He pinned Purple Hearts onto Sgt. Jeremyah Williams and PFC Harry Hikes, two 101st Airborne Division soldiers who were involved in a car bomb attack about 100 feet from their post at a base entry point. After the brief ceremony at Jalalabad Air Base, Williams said it was "an honor and a privilege" to receive his Purple Heart from Hagel.

Speaking to about 200 troops at the Jalalabad base, Hagel made it clear that he knows what they and their families are going through. He fielded several questions from soldiers worried about how the ongoing budget battle in Washington will affect their retirement and other benefits. He told them he is committed to insuring that their pay and benefits are not hurt, even though the $53 billion in cuts over the remainder of this fiscal year will "make our jobs more difficult."

Hagel's trip comes at a turning point in the conflict, as U.S. and NATO allies set their timetable for the withdrawal of combat troops and pressure mounts on the U.S.-led effort to train the Afghan forces. And he must manage the transition as the U.S. ramps up what will be a difficult and expensive extraction of equipment from the country even as Congress slashes billions of dollars from the defense budget.

He has said he wants to use the trip to better understand what's going on in Afghanistan and to get an assessment on the progress of the Afghan forces as they prepare to take over the security of their own country.

FILE - In this Sept. 9, 2012, file photo, Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Percy Harvin runs with the ball during an NFL football game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Minneapolis. The Vikings have agreed to trade the unhappy receiver to Seattle for a package of draft picks that includes the Seahawks' first-round selection next month, No. 25 overall. A person with knowledge of the deal confirmed the details to The Associated Press on Monday, March 11, 2013, on condition of anonymity because the trade will not be official until Harvin passes a physical. (AP Photo/Jim Mone, File)

On the eve of NFL free agency, trades involving top receivers Anquan Boldin and Percy Harvin grabbed the headlines.

In an odd twist Monday, Boldin went from the Ravens to the San Francisco 49ers, the team he helped Baltimore beat 34-31 in last month's Super Bowl.

Harvin, who expressed his discontent in Minnesota, was sent to Seattle, where he will join former Vikings teammate Sidney Rice.

San Francisco acquired the 32-year-old Boldin for a sixth-round draft pick. Boldin, a star in Baltimore's run to the Super Bowl title last season, must pass a physical to complete the deal.

"Anquan was a great receiver for myself and for our football team," said quarterback Joe Flacco, who signed a six-year, $120.6 million deal with the Ravens last week. "It's sad to see a guy like that go, but at the same time, you want what's best for him and you just wish him the best of luck.

"Anquan was a big part of this football team, a big part of this offense. He's one of the main reasons we won the Super Bowl this year."

Boldin had six catches for 104 yards and a touchdown in the Super Bowl victory. He had said he'd consider retirement rather than leave Baltimore. But going to the NFC champions might change his mind.

"It's a business, man. Those things are going to happen," Ravens wide receiver Jacoby Jones said. "I wish Q the best. He's always a Raven with me, and we got something they can't take from us."

Added fellow Baltimore receiver Torrey Smith: "It's not so much about football when you lose someone like that, someone you love like a brother and would do anything for you."

The 24-year-old Harvin, Minnesota's moody and multi-talented receiver, will join the Seahawks for a package of draft picks that includes Seattle's first-round selection next month, No. 25 overall. He also must pass a physical.

Minnesota will also get Seattle's seventh-round pick this year and third-round selection in 2014.

League MVP Adrian Peterson was not thrilled over the news.

"The best all around player I ever seen or you'll ever see! Goes to Seattle! I feel like I just got kicked in the stomach. Several times!!!" Peterson posted on Twitter.

Harvin was producing at an All-Pro level until badly spraining his left ankle last Nov. 4 in a game at Seattle. He was placed on injured reserve a month later. He led the NFL in total yards at the time of his injury.

Harvin, who also has suffered from migraines, will enter the fifth and final season of his rookie deal with a $2.9 million salary that's well under market value ? unless the Seahawks rework it.

Also Monday:

?The Giants are allowing Victor Cruz to enter restricted free agency, placing a first-round tender on the wide receiver.

Team owner John Mara said the Giants will risk having Cruz agree to a contract with another club. New York has the right to match any offer. If the Giants allow him to leave, they will get a first-round draft choice as compensation.

The tender is worth $2.879 million for 2012 for Cruz, who has not made half of that in his three pro seasons.

?Cornerback DeAngelo Hall was cut by the Redskins, a casualty of the team's NFL-imposed salary cap penalty. Washington is over the cap because of an $18 million sanction for the way it structured contracts during the 2010 uncapped season.

Hall had two years remaining on the six-year, $54 million deal and was due to make $7.5 million in salary in 2013.

?The Broncos released nine-year veteran linebacker D.J. Williams, freeing up his $6 million salary in 2013 for other needs. Williams missed nine games while serving a pair of NFL-mandated suspensions last season and was deemed expendable after Wesley Woodyard had a breakout season at weakside linebacker.

Denver also released third quarterback Caleb Hanie, who didn't take a single snap in his one season in Denver, and finalized a three-year deal to keep backup safety David Bruton, their top special teams player.

? The Jets signed quarterback David Garrard to back up ? and provide a challenge to ? starter Mark Sanchez. Garrard has not played in the NFL since 2010. He started 76 games in nine seasons with Jacksonville and played in the 2009 Pro Bowl.

?The Cardinals released running back Beanie Wells after four injury-plagued seasons. A first-round pick in 2009, Wells showed flashes of the brilliance he had at Ohio State, but has only played one full season ? his rookie year.

Wells eclipsed 1,000 yards and scored 10 touchdowns in 2011, but was limited to eight games last season due to turf toe.

? Dallas released linebacker Dan Connor and restructured the contracts of guard Mackenzy Bernadeau, defensive tackle Jay Ratliff and cornerback Orlando Scandrick.

Connor was one of seven free agents Dallas added in free agency last offseason. He got a two-year contract and started eight games after Sean Lee and Bruce Carter were injured.

? Tennessee placed a second-round tender on center Fernando Velasco before the start of free agency. If another team offers Velasco a contract, the tender allows the Titans to match the offer or receive a second-round selection in April's draft from the team signing the lineman.

Velasco started 16 games for Tennessee last season with 13 at center and three at guard, and he has played in 49 career games for the Titans after signing originally in 2008 as an undrafted free agent out of Georgia.

? St. Louis released Quintin Mikell, a strong safety, to clear salary cap space. He was third on the team with 114 tackles and three sacks and three forced fumbles.

Dahl started every game at free safety and had 100 tackles and an interception but struggled in coverage.

Obama moves from confrontation to wooing Republicans. Will it work?

President Obama's job rating has dropped in the latest poll. Now, he's moving away from confrontation, planning to meet with House and Senate Republicans on their turf next week.

President Barack Obama speaks in Newport News, Va. Feb. 26. Turning from confrontation, Obama will meet this coming week with House and Senate Republicans.

Referring to GOP lawmakers as ?principled people who want what?s best for this country,? he noted that he?ll be meeting separately with House and Senate Republicans on their turf this coming week.

?The fact is, America is a nation of different beliefs and different points of view.?That?s what makes us strong, and frankly, makes our democratic debates messy and often frustrating,? Mr. Obama said.??But ultimately what makes us special is when we summon the ability to see past those differences, and come together around the belief that what binds us together will always be more powerful than what drives us apart.?

Will it work? Republicans are skeptical.

In the Weekly Republican Address, Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, senior Republican on the Budget Committee, says, ?I fear the Democrat proposal will fail this defining test and will never achieve balance."

"I fear it will crush American workers and our economy with trillions in new taxes, spending and debt,? Sen. Sessions said. ?I fear [Senate Budget] Chairman Patty Murray will follow the President's lead: raising taxes to enrich the bureaucracy at the expense of the people."

"Government has never been bigger or more out of control," he went on. Democrats ?say the problem is you; they say you are not sending them enough money; they say they have wisely spent every penny. So, you must just send them more. And, if you don't? Well, they won't stop spending, they'll just borrow more. These destructive policies cannot continue. We are at the breaking point."

Just a week ago, Obama was using his regular Saturday broadcast pulpit to blame Republicans for the sequester fiasco.

"Republicans in Congress chose this outcome over closing a single wasteful tax loophole that helps reduce the deficit," he said then. "They decided that protecting special interest tax breaks for the well-off and well-connected is more important than protecting our military and middle-class families from these cuts."

It was the kind of rhetoric he?d used for weeks as he traveled the country campaign-style trying to bend the GOP on new revenues.

When it became clear that wasn?t working, he literally wined and dined groups of Republican lawmakers ? at a Washington restaurant and (in the case of House Budget Committee chairman and former vice presidential candidate Rep. Paul Ryan) at the White House.

?Next week, I?ll attend both the Democratic and Republican party meetings in the Capitol to continue those discussions,? Obama said Saturday.

Obama may have won a clear victory in November, but everything he wants to accomplish his second term ? on Saturday he mentioned ?critical issues like immigration reform and gun violence? ? could stall out if spending and tax issues don?t become unbogged, and soon.

Generally, the President and the administration fare better than Congress and Republicans in public opinion polls.

But despite Friday?s relatively good news on jobs and unemployment, the public (to the extent it pays attention to Washington) is getting weary of the blame-gamesmanship.

This is reflected in the latest survey, which did not bring good news for Obama.

A Reuters/Ipsos online poll out this past week showed 43 percent of people approve of Obama's handling of his job, down 7 percentage points from Feb. 19.

?Americans blame him and his fellow Democrats almost as much as his Republican opponents for a fiscal mess,? Reuters reported. ?This is a pox on everyone's house really," said Ipsos pollster Julia Clark.

Politico noted a half dozen sequester claims made by Obama which turned out to be questionable if not false. ?President Barack Obama hopes to spark a pitchfork revolt against Republicans over sequester-induced budget cuts ? but many Democrats fret that he?s undermined that effort with an early strategy marred by hype, poor planning, and muddled messaging,? Politico?s Glenn Thrush and Carrie Budoff Brown wrote.

The next few days could show whether his new tack succeeds.

2 bodies found at Polish philharmonic

(AP) ? Polish authorities have launched a double homicide investigation after the bodies of a harpist and a security guard were found in a building housing a philharmonic orchestra in western Poland.

Officials say a male security guard was found Friday morning in a pool of blood while a 26-year-old female harpist was also found dead in a different part of the building in the city of Jelenia Gora. She had traveled from Warsaw to perform a concert on Friday evening and was staying in a guest room in the building of the Lower Silesia Philharmonic.

Violetta Niziolek, a spokeswoman for prosecutors, said authorities consider the case one of "double murder" and are investigating.

Niziolek told the private broadcaster TVN24 that the male victim was about 50 to 60 years old.

PFT: Lions could be close to deal with Delmas

BrownsGetty Images

Darrelle Revis and Richard Sherman recently squabbled regarding the question of which of them is the best cornerback in football.

Nobody checked with Joe Haden.

Haden, Browns cornerback and top-five pick in 2010, shared his assessment on Friday?s Pro Football Talk.

?I would say honestly and this is just me being real 100%, I would say Darrelle Revis,? Haden said.? ?I studied tape on guys and I try to look and see what I can do to get my game to be on their levels [and] I feel like I?m honestly the number two cornerback in the league, that?s just my opinion personally.

?I studied all the good guys, all the great guys that are in the league now but Darrelle Revis he just stands out cause he?s just complete.? He tackles, he can play off, he can play press, and he?s just very, very, very patient and he?s just hard to deal with off the line.? His footwork on the line is amazing and that?s just the one thing I feel like I need to get to his level is just press so I feel that?s why he?s the No. 1 cornerback now.?

Haden also made a case for leaving Sherman out of the top two.

?Not to take anything away from him, I mean he?s a really good player on a talented team,? Haden said.? ?They get seen a lot, their defense is, their secondary is amazing with him,? Earl [Thomas], you got [Kam] Chancellor, I mean their other corner too they have just their whole secondary, they get recognition, their team wins, they get seen a lot more but he?s a really, really good player but it would be Revis and then myself.?

So, basically, Haden very politely said to Sherman the stuff Sherman said to Skip Bayless.

Let?s see what Sherman has to say in response.

Payday Loans: Helping You in Times Of Financial Need | Banking ...

Throughout the process of applying for a loan, it?s also essential to ensure you go through all the pertinent conditions and terms that come with the loan, especially those that relate to ?hidden? fees & charges. Knowing everything you go into is the key to prevent all those extra expenses in making a loan! Looking for http://personalloan-singapore.net/ is certainly quick and it is a very simple process. Prior to jumping into borrowing money, be sure to conduct some due diligence first of all. You?ll usually find that you can get the lowest rates of interest, and thus more affordable payments, from a direct lender?s bridging loan, because direct loan providers are not structured so as to have to pay commissions to agents or dealers, and they are capable to pass these cost savings straight on to the borrower. Well, the majority of home owners is aware of this, even how you carefully plan any kind of house improvements or renovations, there are often situations that have a sudden turn of situations. Generally, beginning one plan at home results in locating other things that need repair, blowing out your carefully planned budget with a whole load of unanticipated expenditures. In this case you?ve got two potential outcomes here, the first is to end all the work and wait for you to hold the money that will make the renovations incomplete or on the other hand proceed all of the work to finish the renovations and decide on a bridging loan that offers fast money to pay for that extra money that is needed. We are all conscious that hospital stays can be very costly; if you are part of some kind of accident and don?t have medical insurance or medical cover, you may need to obtain some extra cash immediately to pay the expenses incurred by your treatment. Nasdaq, SharesPost to set up market for unlisted stocks

(Reuters) - Nasdaq OMX Group Inc will form a marketplace for trading in shares of unlisted companies in a joint venture with small trading platform SharesPost Inc, tapping into increasing investor interest in private firms.

The new venture, Nasdaq Private Market, will help the exchange rebuild its reputation as the exchange of choice for unlisted companies, after it was criticized for its role in the botched Facebook Inc IPO last May.

"NYSE was taking a lot of share away from the Nasdaq even in tech listings, so I think it's kind of an opportunistic move for Nasdaq," said Josef Schuster, founder of Chicago-based financial services firm IPOX Schuster LLC.

Major market makers and broker dealers say they lost upward of $500 million because of technical glitches on the Nasdaq during Facebook's May 18 stock market debut.

Nasdaq will own most of the new venture, to be based in San Francisco and led by SharesPost founder Greg Brogger. They hope to launch the new market later this year.

San Bruno, California-based SharesPost began in 2009 and its fortunes rose in step with technology startups such as Facebook Inc and LinkedIn , which traded on the market before they went public.

But it ran into regulatory trouble when the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) stepped up scrutiny of Wall Street banks and electronic markets offering investors a chance to trade shares in hot technology companies before they went public.

Privately held SharesPost was charged by the SEC for failing to register as a broker-dealer before offering securities in its marketplace. It registered as a broker-dealer and paid $100,000 to settle the allegations.

The new venture gives SharesPost a leg up in the increasingly crowded market for trading unlisted stocks, said Jay Ritter, a finance professor at the University of Florida.

"Most young companies that go public in the U.S. go public on the Nasdaq and so the joint venture gives SharesPost a lot of credibility," he said.

SharesPost's broker dealer and investment advisory business will continue to operate separately from the joint venture.

Recent legislation, the Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act, has boosted opportunities for trading of unlisted companies. Under the act, an unlisted company can have 2,000 shareholders, up from 500.

Age-related dementia may begin with neurons' inability to rid themselves of unwanted proteins

Mar. 5, 2013 ? A team of European scientists from the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) and the Cologne Excellence Cluster on Cellular Stress Responses in Aging-Associated Diseases (CECAD) at the University of Cologne in Germany has taken an important step closer to understanding the root cause of age-related dementia. In research involving both worms and mice, they have found that age-related dementia is likely the result of a declining ability of neurons to dispose of unwanted aggregated proteins.

As protein disposal becomes significantly less efficient with increasing age, the buildup of these unwanted proteins ultimately leads to the development and progression of dementia.

"By studying disease progression in dementia, specifically by focusing on mechanisms neurons use to dispose of unwanted proteins, we show how these are interconnected and how these mechanisms deteriorate over time," said Markus Glatzel, M.D., a researcher involved in the work from the Institute of Neuropathology at UKE in Hamburg, Germany. "This gives us a better understanding as to why dementias affect older persons; the ultimate aim is to use these insights to devise novel therapies to restore the full capacity of protein disposal in aged neurons."

To make this discovery, scientists carried out their experiments in both worm and mouse models that had a genetically-determined dementia in which the disease was caused by protein accumulation in neurons. In the worm model, researchers in the lab of Thorsten Hoppe, Ph.D., from the CECAD Cluster of Excellence could inactivate distinct routes used for the disposal of the unwanted proteins. Results provided valuable insight into the mechanisms that neurons use to cope with protein accumulation. These pathways were then assessed in young and aged mice. This study provides an explanation of why dementias exponentially increase with age. Additionally, neuron protein disposal methods may offer a therapeutic target for the development of drugs to treat and/or prevent dementias.

"This is an exciting study that helps us understand what's going wrong at a cellular level in age-related dementias," said Mark Johnston, Ph.D., Editor-in-Chief of the journal GENETICS. "This research holds possibilities for future identification of substances that can prevent, stop, or reverse this cellular malfunction in humans."
