Former NFL quarterback Daunte Culpepper is the most recent in a long line of prominent athletes who went broke following their careers. Check out 10 other high-profile players who have watched previous wealth away.

Daunte Culpepper

Profession: NFL quarterback

Career earnings: Signed a 10-year, $102 million deal with the Vikings in 2003.

Culpepper was one of the best in the biz in the early 2000s before a knee injury slowed him significantly. The injury saw the three-time pro bowler traded to Miami before short stints in Oakland and Detroit. Culpepper eventually joined the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the UFL, where he last played in 2010.

Andre Rison

Profession: Football player

Career earnings: $20 million

Andre Previn "Bad Moon" Rison's accomplishments read like a bucket list - he was a football wide receiver who played for the NFL's Indianapolis Colts, Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders - and the CFL's Toronto Argonauts. He was selected to the Pro Bowl five times, won a Super Bowl championship with the Green Bay Packers in 1996 and won a Grey Cup championship with the Argos in 2004. But in a fight at his home with recording artist Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes a fire began which quickly spread and destroyed the building. Rison appears prominently in the 2012 film 'Broke'. In 2013 he was sentenced to five years' probation and required to pay more than $300,000 in restitution for failure to pay child support.

Mike Tyson

Profession: Boxer

Career earnings: $300 million+

'Iron' Mike Tyson holds the record as the youngest boxer to win the WBC, WBA and IBF heavyweight titles at 20 years, 4 months, and 22 days old. In 1988, Tyson became the lineal champion and successfully defended the world heavyweight championship nine times. In 1990, he lost his titles to underdog James "Buster" Douglas. In 1992, Tyson was convicted of rape and served three years in jail. A rematch with Evander Holyfield (Tyson lost the first fight) ended when Tyson was disqualified for biting Holyfield's ear. In August 2003, after years of financial struggles, Tyson finally filed for bankruptcy.

Michael Vick

Profession: Football player

Career earnings: $130 million

Currently an NFL quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, Michael Vick also played for the Atlanta Falcons for five years. Vick's reputation was tarnished by his involvement in an illegal dog-fighting ring for which he served 2 years in jail. His finances suffered from poor management, bad investments and lawsuits and in July 2008 Vick sought bankruptcy protection.

George Best

Profession: Soccer player

Career earnings: $100 million

George Best had a spectacular soccer career and won the European Cup with Manchester United in 1968 and was named the European Footballer of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year. However, Best was a heavy drinker most of his adult life which led to a liver transplant in 2002 and his death in 2005. How he summarized it: 'I spent a lot of money on booze, birds (women), and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.'

Antoine Walker

Profession: Basketball player

Career earnings: $110 million

Antoine Walker was picked sixth overall by the Boston Celtics in the 1996 NBA Draft. He became a force in the NBA for the Celtics and eventually was traded to the Dallas Mavericks and the Miami Heat. In 2006 he won his first NBA Championship. But following a string of gambling-related problems - in 2009, Walker was charged with three felony counts of writing bad checks stemming from more than $800,000 in gambling debts, for example - and a robbery in which his Mercedes was stripped of expensive parts. By May 2010 Walker filed for bankruptcy protection with assets of $4.3 million and debts of $12.7 million.

Lenny Dykstra

Profession: Baseball player

Net worth in 2008: $58 million

Dykstra turned a chain of car washes into an empire that eventually included a luxury airline, Wayne Gretzky's $17 million mansion and a $60 million personal fortune. Dykstra filed for bankruptcy in 2008 listing over $30 million in debts to various banks and law firms. After his retirement, Dykstra ran a car wash. In May 2011, Dykstra was sentenced to house arrest after a bankruptcy fraud indictment.

Allen Iverson

Profession: Basketball player

Career earnings: $204 million

Allen Iverson was selected first overall in the 1996 NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.Iverson was rated the fifth greatest NBA shooting guard of all time by ESPN in 2008. In February 2012 Iverson told a Georgia judge that he was flat broke and could not pay an $860k jewelry debt. Iverson was known to travel with a 50 person entourage, blew millions on gambling, lavish gifts and had accrued massive monthly child support obligations.

Evander Holyfield

Profession: Boxer

Career earnings: $250 million

Evander Holyfield won a Bronze medal at the 1984 Olympic Games and is one of the best-known professional athletes. He's notched wins over fighters including George Foreman, Larry Holmes, Riddick Bowe and Mike Tyson (twice). Holyfield is the only four-time World Heavyweight Champion. In June 2008 a legal notice stated Holyfield's $10-million estate would be auctioned off due to foreclosure. Holyfield currently owes hundreds of thousands in child support payments and is facing the loss of his driver's licence.

Kenny Anderson

Profession: Basketball player

Career earnings: $60 Million

Kenny Anderson played 14 seasons for many NBA teams including the New Jersey Nets and Portland Trail Blazers. He fathered seven children with five different women including Tami Roman who successfully filed for divorce from Anderson in 1998 citing infidelity. Anderson is reputed to have had monthly expenses of around $41,000 at one point, including payments on eight cars, his home and gifts to friends and family.
